October 3 and 4 2009. Valkyries and Wing run to Warm Springs, Oregon.
I know it is a little late but here it is anyway.
Note: This account is edited from a ride report posted by Friagabi on another site.
Three bikes assemble and leave at 7:35 AM from Morton, Redline, MrBaldwyn and Friagabi. Cloudy and fog w/possible clearing no rain.
A quick run to Randle and a stop for breakfast. Then south on Forest Service 25 and picked our way down to Carson and the Columbia River, east to Hood River. Fueled up in Hood River for the next leg of the run. No coffee and jumped right back on the road for the leg up the east side of Mt. Hood. A great day, a little cold running the ridge on Forest Service 25 but so far just a little mist in Morton, Gerbings solved the problem. But wait things can change.
Backside of Mt. Hood near the intersection of SR35 and SR26, it starts to snow, those kinda flakes that get caught in the back draft of the windshield and swirl around in front of you. We finally run out of it just in time to hit a hailstorm. Just enough to let you know it was there and it changed to rain. It rained for 30 minutes or so and went away. No more rain for the rest of the trip, sort of.
Pulled into Warm Springs Resort about 3:00 PM. Friagabi set up his camp trailer (including his electric blanket!) then went down to the pool for a soak. A hot tub they said was fed from the springs.
Redline and MrBaldwyn, who think of themselves as more rational human beings, headed to the main lodge. Large heated rooms, soft beds, lounge, casino, restaurant and covered parking for the bikes.
A fourth member of the ride, BODO, has arrived from a different direction. We can see his bike and believe he checked in but is not registered under that name. Since nobody knows his real name the three of us grabbed a seat next to the fire and spent some quality time.
Looked out the window and here comes BODO. Now he was dressed in some DRB gear. His normal hat (a sorta porkpie rescued from a flea market), mirrored glasses, and sandals with white crew sox. Now if you think something was missing, no not actually, He had on a white bathrobe he begged from the resort. We asked if he wanted to go to dinner? He said something about checking out the action at the hot tub. I think that was only because we were all looking sideways at his robe. We told him to go ahead and let us know if he was going to get involved, otherwise we would maintain position at the fire place. In about an hour here he comes, dressed for dinner.
Fine eats and a lot of them. Good conversation. Everyone called it about 11 pm except BODO who headed for the casino. Friagabi later reported putting his electric blanket on high for the night.
MrBaldwyn and Redline left BODO to sleep it off and rolled into Friagabi’s camp about 0730.
First time any of us had tried to ride in a mud storm. It was raining. Mud. Muddy water from the sky so thick you could not see thru your windshield. Found out later that the mud was from a major dust storm up in central Washington that had shut down I90 the night before and hit us as rain in North central Oregon about daylight.
Headed north to SR216 and followed it to SR97 then again North to Biggs. Nice little ride down to the river and back up the other side. Stopped in Grass Valley for breakfast. Better café than on Saturday. Just made it for breakfast it was 11:15 AM. Nice run up the hill from the river to Goldendale.
Finally saw some wild life, a Tom turkey ran out from the left shoulder and took flight just before Friagabi could bag it and a little farther along a Coyote crossed the road.
Stopped in Yakima then MrBaldwyn headed North for Stevens Pass. Redline and Friagabi took Chinook Pass. Prefect sunny weather all the way home.
Note: Friagabi also recounts a joust on the Chinook Pass highway between the two Valkyrie riders and a pack of BMW’s. It is my understanding that the speeds did in fact exceed the legal posted limit resulting in a peg dragging good time. Sorry I missed it that part of it! And, there were some Harley riders tried to stay with the Wing near the top of Stephens Pass...Hope they got home ok!
